Without the continuous onslaught of assignments over the summer, I was able to reconnect with my passion for watching sports. On numerous occasions I found myself screaming and cheering for strangers on my television as they swam or raced across the screen. I felt genuine joy at their wins during medal ceremonies and true heartbreak when I witnessed an especially vulnerable moment of an athlete in tears after not achieving their desired outcome.
I am no exception. Sports and athletes garner a large and loyal fan base across the world. From rowdy sports pubs in England, stadiums overflowing with cricket buffs in India, sophisticated men and women in lavish outfits adorning hats at the Wimbeldon, tiny children running around barefoot imitating Messi in Thailand; people of all races, genders and walks of life are drawn to sports. They watch on with eager eyes as they track the every movement and muscle of the sportsperson in front of them. This infatuation carries off the field too.
